Jacking gear pinion replacement on Seadrill’s West Elara
Client: Seadrill
Industry: Oil & Gas
Asset: West Elara
Location: North Sea
Year: 2024 – 2026
Challenge
Seadrill requested a full replacement of all 54 jacking gear pinions on its jack-up rig, West Elara, located in the North Sea. This presented significant constraints and demanded custom engineered lifting solutions.
Solution
The job started off with concept studies for the development of lifting concepts. This was followed by the design and manufacturing of custom lifting equipment capable of handling the 16-ton jacking gears and overcoming challenges posed by the narrow space, lack of overhead structure, and low overhead room. The campaign involved the mechanical disassembly and lifting of all jacking gears, pinion replacements, and reinstallation of the gears. The pinion replacements were done both onshore and offshore.
The work was carried out while the rig remained in full operation. By avoiding the use of deck cranes over extended periods, the team ensured minimal disruption to day-to-day rig activities.
Results
Delivered under challenging offshore conditions, the project demonstrated Axess Technologies’ expertise in developing custom lifting products and executing large scale, high-risk mechanical replacements. This was achieved through method-driven engineering and controlled offshore execution. The project was completed safely within the tight schedule, supporting the planned rig move.
“This adds to our proven track record in delivering high-risk offshore lifting operations safely and efficiently. We are pleased to have supported the client in successfully completing this challenging scope,” Trond Brudeseth, Department Director – Engineering Service at Axess Technologies, said.
