Summer Internship: A Q&A with Marina Hole
Marina Hole
Project Engineer, Axess Technologies
Molde, Norway
Why did you decide to choose Axess Technologies for your internship?
As a student, it was important for me to work throughout vacations and try to get as much work experience as possible. Axess Technologies was looking for summer interns, and I felt that I fit the requirements well. I wanted a job related to my studies in Construction Engineering and thought it would be a perfect way to gain insight into the daily life of an engineer.
What did you do as an intern?
I mostly assisted in writing work packages alongside smaller translation jobs. I did some calculations for a beam that we needed for a load test, which I got to join later on. I also participated in both the planning and execution of a smaller load test for a winch frame. Additionally, I assisted with production follow-ups and visited our producer’s workshop.
I liked that I had the opportunity to be involved in the load tests after assisting with the planning processes in the office. Seeing theoretical plans being executed in real life was very educational.
What motivated you to join Axess Technologies after your internship?
I kept in touch with Axess Technologies during my last year in school and my bachelor’s thesis was actually a task given by the company. I had mentors in the company who supported and gave advice on the thesis. I got to know many of my colleagues during the summer and was left with a great impression of the company. All of this made it a very easy decision to apply for a job here.
What is your current job scope?
As a newly-employed Project Engineer, I have been given a chance to influence my scope of work based on my interests, knowledge and experience. Up until now, I have been working with method planning and I have also been able to take part in offshore executions which I really enjoy. It is great to see that good planning onshore results in good offshore executions.
I hope to develop my skills within method planning and grow alongside the company, continuously learning and gaining experience.
What do you like about working here?
The company believes that having engineers in coveralls and gaining hands-on field experience is crucial to helping clients solve their problems. I like that engineers get the opportunity to participate in field executions. I strongly believe that getting hands-on experience is key to understanding the whole scope of the work and improving the quality of work done onshore.
We have a lot of experienced and skilled people both offshore and onshore. My impression of the culture was that everybody was very helpful and committed to getting the work with a strong emphasis on quality and Health, Safety and Environment (HSE). Keeping close communication between the departments results in positive consequences for the company.
I also like that I get to combine both my certificate of apprenticeship and my bachelor’s degree, and that I get to develop myself within both fields at the same time.
What outdoor activities do you enjoy outside of work?
If I were to describe a perfect day outside, it would involve going for a mountain hike, watching the sunset, setting up a hammock and simply enjoying the fresh air.
I enjoy being outside in general and staying active, so I always try to make time for activities such as disc-golfing, kayaking and skiing. I enjoy challenging myself, so I am always open to trying new things.
While not an outdoor activity, handball is my most time-consuming activity. I have played handball since I was 10 years old and have spent countless amount of hours running on flat surfaces indoors. Therefore, hiking and running outside in varied terrain has been very important for me to stay injury-free.
