Mr. Ray Liversidge, Axess North Sea’s Technical Support (Level III NDT Inspector and Level III IRATA – Rope Access), presented at the UK Conference on Certification and Standardisation in NDT/CM on 20-21 March 2018 at Manchester, UK.
In his presentation, Mr. Liversidge shared the current climate of the oil and gas industry and the general positive trend that is felt in Aberdeen. He also reviewed the major events the industry has experienced over the last 5 years: how the Brent Crude Oil Price affected the industry NDT requirements, Rig Utilisation Trend over the last few years since the oil price crash, and the lack of update of the PCN Level Corrosion & Erosion In-Service Inspection qualification that was introduced in 2014/2015.
Among the key topics he discussed are:
- Oil & Gas Industry Announcements for the last few months.
- The qualification requirements for the Oil & Gas Industry in both the Production Side and Drilling Side of the Industry.
- How the O&G industry certification requirements demand multi-disciplined NDT Technicians to fill bed spaces, leaving little or no room for trainee technicians to gain new qualifications.
- The redundancies made in 2014/2015 have left a skills deficit in experienced NDT technicians in the area, and how several companies in Aberdeen expect to have a skills shortage in the next year or two as the industry bounces back.
Organised by the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT), the two-day event focused on the recent issues and changes to the Personnel Certification of Non-Destructive Testing (PCN) scheme, as well as the past, present and future development of NDT/CM personnel certification from various industries.
